Age: 21
Canon: Final Fantasy Type-0
Canon Point: Prologue to the game, moments before he dies.
Background: Izana on the Final Fantasy wiki.
Personality:
Izana Kunagiri is calm but energetic, and has been so since at least his early teens. He's also personable - he avoided the attack on the village that he, his brother Machina, and their friend Rem come from because he was away with some traveling tradesmen he'd talked into taking him with them; he also befriended Ace in the space of only a few encounters. He likes chocobos and he likes caring for them - he even says that people mocking that can probably not be trusted. He is a good soldier who does his best to accomplish his missions, even while knowing where his abilities place him and trying to stick to his level, rather than trying to rely on some sort of inflated ego and useless heroism. He accepts the sacrifices that need to be made in his world as a matter of course.
In some ways, he seems almost like the opposite of Machina, who seems rather broody and impulsive and is certainly immature, always rebelling against the situations he's in.
However, this sunshiny image is not of a young man claiming perfection.
For one thing, he is prideful. When Ace asks him to assist in the upcoming mission as liaison between the Agito Cadets Class Zero and the army, he's angry at the thought that Ace is offering that as charity. He snaps, and almost turns the offer down. (But he also does have the patience to listen to Ace's answer, and to consider the situation from different angles before making his decision.)
For another thing, he is envious. He doesn't allow that to ruin his relationship with Machina, or to prevent him from befriending another Cadet, or to stop him from doing his absolute best to help the Cadets - the hope for all of Orience - but there is definite resentment in him for being rejected from such a position himself, resentment that his abilities are only those of an ordinary soldier. He also wants, deeply, to prove his worth to his younger brother, feeling like he's not enough.
Izana is, quite like his brother, capable of breaking down. Most notably, when he is certain of his coming death. He's twenty-one and not ready to die - to be forgotten. Even then, most of his thoughts are for others.
He is also prone to overthinking things. Ace receives some of his thoughts with 'is that another of your crackpot theories?' - suggesting that those are regular with him. On the other hand, the theory in question is that, even while everyone forgets those who have died - the soldiers who have fallen or family that has passed - what one does still matters, because everything and everyone is interconnected. What is done doesn't truly get lost. Izana is a bit of a dreamer.
But also, most of all, Izana is patient and persistent. He spent years rebuilding the relationship with his younger brother - part of that time during some of the most difficult periods of adolescence, for both of them. He is capable of setting aside his own hurt to work for what is right, both to provide Machina with the family he has left, and at the beginning of the game, when - on the verge of death - he keeps on going, trying to accomplish his mission. He will try to figure out what is right, what needs doing, and will dedicate all that he has in him to accomplish it.
Abilities:
Izana is a Rubrum soldier, so he is proficient in fighting. His regular patrol job involves containing monsters that are considered a danger (such as specific coeurls, etc), and he seems to have survived rather well against dangerous beasts, so he is at least decently good at it.
Also, as a citizen of Rubrum, he can and does use magic. (Rubrum citizens are somewhat surprised, in Concordia, by the necessity to carry a bucket of water from the river to a house, or to warm water in a dedicated vessel, or to strike a fire from kindling. These are things that are routinely accomplished in Rubrum by magic. These are things that Izana would also be extremely accustomed to.) He is shown to attempt to heal his chocobo, Chichiri (failing because the source of magic is jammed), so, along with combat magic, he uses restorative spells as well.
He is also good at helping at the chocobo farm, caring for the animals there.
Alignment:
Aiada. A lot of what he does is defined by his need for his brother to be proud of him - and, to an extend, envy of said younger brother. He is very well in control and cerebral about it all, rather than letting emotions run him, but they are the foundation of his motivations.
Other: N/A.
General Sample: TDM thread with Machina.
Emotion Sample: Negative emotional effect and positive emotional effect.
Questions: If possible, could he show up with his (war) chocobo Chichiri? She is literally curled up around Izana at the last moments.
